Frequently Asked Questions
What are the essential supplies for keeping a pet bird healthy and happy?
Keeping a bird healthy and happy requires more than just a cage and some seed. At a minimum, you’ll need a spacious, well-ventilated enclosure, perches of varying thicknesses, and a consistent supply of clean water and species-appropriate food. Birds also need enrichment, so include toys that stimulate foraging, climbing, and chewing. Cuttlebones or mineral blocks are vital for beak health, and depending on the species, access to bathing opportunities and UV light may be needed to support feather and bone condition.
How often should bird habitats be cleaned or replaced?
Bird cages, dishes, and perches should be cleaned daily or at least several times a week to prevent bacterial buildup and reduce the risk of respiratory infections. Toys should be rotated regularly to keep your bird engaged and replaced when damaged or overly worn. Food and water containers should be washed with hot, soapy water daily. Perches made from natural wood may need to be replaced less often but still checked for splinters and droppings.
Is it necessary to provide UV lighting for indoor birds?
While not mandatory for every species, UV lighting is highly recommended for indoor birds, in particular parrots, cockatiels, and budgies. UVB light aids in vitamin D3 synthesis, which supports calcium absorption and bone health. Lack of natural sunlight can lead to deficiencies, poor feather condition, and weakened immune response. Full-spectrum bird-safe lights should be placed above the cage and used for around 8–12 hours a day, depending on the bird’s natural cycle. Always avoid regular household bulbs, which don’t emit the necessary spectrum.
