Frequently Asked Questions
What equipment do I need to set up a freshwater aquarium?
A proper freshwater aquarium setup requires more than just a tank and fish. Start with an appropriately sized aquarium based on the species you plan to keep. You’ll also need a quality filtration system to manage waste and toxins, a heater (for tropical fish), a thermometer, and a lighting system suitable for fish and any live plants. Gravel or sand serves as a substrate, and decorations or plants provide hiding spots and stimulation. A water conditioner is essential to neutralise chlorine, and a test kit will help monitor water parameters like pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Don’t forget a net, cleaning tools, and fish food suited to your species.
How often should I clean my fish tank?
Regular maintenance is key to healthy fish. Generally, perform a partial water change of around 20–30% weekly or fortnightly, depending on the tank’s size and bio-load. Use a gravel vacuum to remove waste from the substrate, and gently clean any algae from the tank walls. Filter media should be rinsed in tank water (not tap water) once a month to preserve beneficial bacteria. Full tank cleanouts are rarely necessary and can actually harm your aquarium’s biological balance. Keeping a schedule helps avoid issues with ammonia and nitrate buildup.
What should I feed my fish and how often?
Feeding depends on the species, but most fish do well with a varied diet that includes flakes, pellets, frozen or freeze-dried foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Herbivorous fish benefit from algae wafers or blanched vegetables. Feed small amounts once or twice a day (only as much as they can eat in 2–3 minutes), to avoid overfeeding, which pollutes the water. Observe your fish during feeding to make sure all are eating and adjust accordingly. Always research the specific dietary needs of your fish species for best results.
